I have Frontier Vantage (former AT&T uverse area) with Arris NVG589 gateway. I have it configured to passthrough to my own router, and all clients are connected to my router (I am an internet only customer). I want to clear up a port on my router, I figure I can move my VOIP device (Ooma) to one of the open ports on the NVG589 gateway. These ports still seems to function and accept connections when I tried it, are there any caveats/warnings about using the open ports while it is in passthrough mode? Will VOIP function reliably this way? I have seen a warning about using the carrier supplied phone service while using the router in passthrough mode, I don't know if this would apply to my own VOIP device. I work from home so I would rather not find out the hard way by way of dropped calls etc.
In general does the NVG589 switch effectively between ports when one of them is a passthrough to a router?
